How do I get the Depth Buffer to render?

Having trouble getting the Depth Buffer to render in the 2008 multi-genre god-game Spore. It just shows a black screen. For those familiar with the game, you'll know that the game has "editors" Only there does the depth buffer render.

Is there any way to get it to render in the rest of the game? Or is there a reason why it doesn't work?
