Overclocking - any new developments? was created by PenitentEngine
As long as I've been using injectors, this, mentioned in the common problems sticky, has been an issue: "Overlays, be it MSI Afterburner, Steam, or anything in-between, can cause issues. The ones I've personally experienced are a CTD on startup and ReShade simply not launching with the game. Try disabling these first if you have problems with the application itself."
I am wondering if there has been any update to this problem. I need just an extra bit of juice from my GPU to run games at max settings with a couple of effects injected by Reshade and for years I have been suffering with slightly less than optimal fps in favor of a better picture and I would like to have my cake and eat it to. Anyone got anything? Perhaps there's another way to overclock that doesn't use an overlay or something?
Thanks for your time and help.

Hmm. Personally I'm using both ENB and ReShade on all games where possible. Both injectors have the same possible issues with overclocking/overlay tools but personally, I've never encountered a single problem. Having been using Fraps, MSI Afterburner, GF Experience and a lot of other things without any issues whatsoever.

You can use any overclocking software as long as you don't run monitoring/OSD that comes with it. It conflicts with the D3D\OpenGL calls injection that ReShade/ENB does.

Can you clarify on that a bit, Max? I'm using MSI afterburner right now and the only place I have to turn off "monitoring" is where I have ability to enable or disable "hardware control and monitoring" as a whole. So if I uncheck that box, I can no longer enable the OC of my graphics card.
Under the monitoring tab in settings, I don't have the option to turn the OSD off, just have the option to remove elements from the OSD. I removed all elements (which only seemed remove these elements from the main Afterburner panel as opposed to the in game overlay) but I feel like the OSD will still load just with nothing in it.
Thanks

I'm using the latest version of MSI. Many of these options aren't on here, including the tab labeled "on screen display". The box with "show in on screen display" in the monitoring tab isn't there. I just tried to run a game with reshade, afterburner and with all of the elements that would be displayed in the OSD unchecked but it crashed after a couple of minutes (ran for over an hour without msi before this).

You can turn off RivaTuner's detection for that game.
MSI AB is just the hardware monitoring/OC utility. RivaTuner is what allows you to get an OSD and record video.
If you don't want RivaTuner at all you can re-intstall MSI AB without RT.

Marty: Big fan of your work.
I've had this issue with every game I have tried that used reshade, sweetfx or ENB where I was overclocking, both with afterburner and precision x. As long as I have been using injectors, I have never been able to overclock while the injected program is running. It's been awhile but I've been through my share of trouble shooting this problem in the past, with no success.
These CTDs, by the way, aren't on start up. With the current game, FFXIV, I can log into the game and even log into my character where I can sit and view the world. I'm not sure how long it will go just sitting there idling, but I do know that after about a minute, maybe two minutes, I get a CTD with a fatal dx error. I do not get any CTDs or experience any problems with the game, using reshade, when I play after I shut down afterburner. By shut down, I mean, revert to default settings and exit the program. If I leave the OC settings applied, exit afterburner and enter the game with my OCed video card, it will give me a fatal dx error. I have to open afterburner and revert to default settings, close the program and only then will my games run normally. Have tested it on more than one game as of this edit.
FierySwordsman: I used a program to scrub afterburner off of my computer and then reinstalled and this time made sure not to install tuner. I OCed my card and launched the game and still I experienced the same problem as above.
Any further guidance you could give would be appreciated.

What GPU do you have?
The thing that I don't get is it's unanimous across all games according to your testimony. Generally a directX error affects one specific game as a result of some installation/compatibility shenanigans.
...does it happen on OpenGL games, too?
I tried OC'ing my 1070 a while back. Noticed it liked to run at ≈1600-1900mhz, so I tried adding +50 to test. Problem was, when I tried Subnautica it re-allocated some power and pushed the core up to well over 2ghz to load the terrain and crashed. Turns out if my core starts going over ≈2020mhz it crashes, so I've just stuck with OC'ing my 6700k instead. I've got thermal/electrical power to spare, so it's kinda underwhelming.
