I have the default picture on my profile because I can't figure out where to change it.

Gravatar is used for profile pictures, you can't change it directly on the website =)

I think maybe a smaller avatar size would be nice. They seem... kinda huge.

Not as huge on my 1440p monitor.. then again I always zoom out websties
