When attempting to install Reshade it gives the error "Existing effect files found in non-default location. Please remove them first to avoid duplicates."

This is an asinine suggestion for multiple reasons. 

First, if I want duplicate effects, that is no business of the Reshade installer.
Second, a warning for non-technically experienced users is fine, but blocking the install with no option to bypass is unnecessary.
Third, the installer scanning the file system beyond the installer's root directory and the selected game's path is completely unacceptable

The installer scanning the file system beyond what is strictly necessary and selected and without any prompt or permission is a complete invasion of privacy and far oversteps the installer's bounds. This seems more like something like spyware or a trojan would do and if I had not been using Reshade for years at this point, I would have immediately uninstalled it.

I would like answers to the following questions:
Am I required to run the installer in a virtualized environment to protect my privacy? 
Which servers does the Reshade installer connect to and communicate with? (Github, update checker, ...)
Does Reshade, at any time, send any data rather than receive?


These are serious privacy concerns, past simply an over-aggressive installer. At no time, did I ever give Reshade permission, nor agree to anything, regarding having all of my folders and files scanned, in order to search for these "duplicate" effects.

Looking past these extremely concerning privacy issues, Reshade should have nothing to do with the actual source shaders. Not only are there many good, valid reasons to load duplicate effects (e.g. multiple UI masks), but if I wanted to stack a hundred ambient occlusions, that is my choice, not the installer's. Reshade is simply a tool to load shaders into the game, not an actual shader manager. While the installer has moved more and more towards being a manager for better or worse (worse in my opinion), the actual Reshade injector works perfectly fine and sufficiently. There should be a way to bypass the installer or manually install the dll file without having to go through the installer, or at the very least, Reshade should warn rather than completely block the installation. Better yet, simply give the user the option. 

The effects were, by the way, the only effects that you are forced to download and install. Again, a lack of options. I already had an existing installation which I deleted the dll of troubleshoot another issue. Even if I had backed the dll up, I would still never be able to update to a newer version of Reshade, since I would not have the dll for the new version. There is simply no reason to completely block the installation just like there is no reason to force download any shader.

Reshade wont load with Borderlands The Pre Sequel, installed it multiple Times now.

ReShade 6.6.1 crash with Dead Space (2023) was created by SomeGuy1124
Hopefully this is the correct spot to post this but I'm just putting this here for documentation in case others want to play the game with ReShade during the spooky season.
Installed using DX12 where it'll crash on start-up and will immediately work once you uninstall ReShade.

Found an old post for a different game trying an older version of ReShade and it works with version 6.5.1.
I don't know where the breakpoint is between 6.5.1 -> 6.6.1 but I'm off to go get spooked and hopefully this helps some one.

As i mentioned in the title, i heard that Reshade works for PVP in RAGE MP, so i downloaded and installed it. However, after installing it my game crashes every 10 minutes. When i uninstall Reshade, the problem is fixed. What should I do?

World of Warcraft has officially started its war on 3rd party software and as such are now issuing bans for using Reshade. Advised to uninstall if you don't wish to lose your entire WoW account to a permaban.

I use PerfectPerspective.fx from Fubax in Automobilista 2 (AMS2). This works flawlessly with 6.4.1 of Reshade but following an update to 6.5.1 the game CTD on the Reiza splash screen. (  ReShade splash (press HOME etc) appears, followed by the Reiza splash screen. The game then CTD without showing the first menu. )
AMS2 is a DX11 game based on the latest version of the Madness Engine (many revisions to the engine following PC2 - it's quite a different codebase!)

TL;DR -
The Steam "gameoverlayrenderer64.dll" is crashing with and ACCESS VIOLATION (
c0000005) in 6.5.1 but is working flawlessly with 6.4.1.

As for the Steam gameoverlayrenderer64.dll and other potential causes:
1: There is no way to successfully disable/remove/rename gameoverlayrenderer64.dll so it is not loaded as it is reinstalled with every Steam start if missing.
2: "gameoverlayrenderer64.dll" is loaded even if Steam overlays are disabled.
3: The issue appears for both RTX3080Ti and RX9070XT. In both cases GPU overlays were disabled.
4: There is no MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner or any other GPU/CPU performance overlays.

The following is a description of what I have done to troubleshoot the issue. (There is also a fun Easter Egg at the end!)

For now I will need to stick to version 6.4.1.

Analysis:

Working through trouble shooting guide I performed the following steps for both 6.5.1, and then 6.4.1 to observe any differences in logging.
NOTHING was kept between tests on 6.5.1 and 6.4.1

1: Disabled all Steam Overlays.
2: Disabled all AMD overlays. (Note: I experienced the same behaviour with my RTX3080Ti before swapping it to an RX9070XT, so I do not believe this is GPU driver/brand related.)
3: Disabled SimHub (Overlays for sim-racing)
4: Disabled Steam GPU acceleration for its own browser.
5: Uninstalled AMS2 and deleted all remnants in steam Common folder.
6: Removed all AMS2 configuration data from Documents/.../** and AppData/.../** (... is just my way of saying all AMS2 data directories)
7: Reinstalled AMS2 and configured it for a basic Borderless Window default settings.
8: Installed ReShade (DX11) with only those shaders which cannot be disabled - the most basic install possible. (SweetFX disabled)
9: Game is launched (no ReShade elements are enabled or changes made to the basic settings)

Some Extra Information (basically, mucking about to see what can be done with 6.5.1)
I installed DXVK into AMS2 and found it to be beneficial to framerates. 
Installing 6.4.1 for DirectX 11 after DXVK worked flawlessly with FuBax PerfectPerspective.fx - Vulkan was used as the render engine as indicated by Vulkan stats overlay.
Removing 6.4.1 and then reinstalling for Vulkan also worked flawlessly with FuBax PerfectPerspective.fx - Vulkan was used as the render engine as indicated by Vulkan stats overlay.

Based on my experience goes:

There could be certain specific shaders that causing the game to crash or while during compling shaders, the program in question will quit very unexpectedly.

For testing purposes, just install the basic shaders, don't install anything else, see if that will work or not, if it indeed works, install everything again, then you will need to work on which specific shader or shaders is causing the game in question to crash, once you find out which ones are crashing the game, it should work with other games as well, some specific shaders, takes forever to compile, as its having problems, again, you will need to check the reshade log for more details on this.

And:

Reshade version: 5.9.2 and under seems to work the best for older games, far as overall performance is concerned, but, you can test different versions on your own time.

Lastly, when uninstalling reshade in general, there is one specific file that's still kept within the application folder, I believe its: ReshadePreset.ini.

If this file is still kept in the application folder, the overall performance might be slightly lowered, so just heads up on it, just uninstalling reshade, doesn't mean everything is uninstalled, I would just manually take out all the given files/folders that reshade installed, manually, then start out fresh.

And within the front page, where it describes my Quad Titan Z testing/tuning results, which is on Page 95 to 105, I did alot of extensive testing on some old DX9 games on which specific shaders causing it the games to crash, it was alot of work.

I've been trying to find a solution to this but I can't find anything that pertains to my specific problem— that, or I'm just not phrasing it correctly. I still have the DX9 version of the sims 4 and downloaded all of my effects onto the respective mode for reshade (I've tried it on every .exe file for the sims 4 as well). The effects load in just fine and the little bar on top shows up as well, but even though it shows that the effects are enabled, it's not actually showing anything in my game. I have reshade 6.5.1 with add-on support, so I'm really not sure what the problem is. Do I need an older version of reshade? I used to have a one from like two years ago that I never deleted until a few months ago that still worked before I uninstalled it, so I'm kind of at a loss as to why it isn't working now with the newer version

i downloaded the latest version of reshade this morning and when i logged back in the ground, structures, fences, etc. were all bugged out and invisible. the night before when i logged off the game with reshade installed was totally fine, but when id logged on after the game update and updating reshade all i could see when i logged on were players, tuffs of grass, and other nature related elements in the game. i've tried restarting my pc, uninstalling and reinstalling both Star Stable and Reshade, using different versions of reshade with and without add-on support, but absolutely nothing is working.

ontop of all this, when i was trying to download the updated reshade windows kept flagging it as a threat.

any help with this would be appreciated.

I was loading up a game, and the bug happened where there was a mistake with the file path for effects. However, I uninstalled and installed Reshade on the game, and I switched to another preset, and it looked like it restarted with only two effects enabled. I spent days working on that preset, and it was all gone. I searched for this, but it looks like nobody was talking about it, either that, or I don't know how to describe this. Not only that, but I also tried to find an old version of the preset file, but it says no changes were made. I also didn't change the name of the file, as I just left it as “ReShadePreset.txt” as I heard that other files can overwrite this, but this doesn't seem like something like that. So now I just gave up and hope someone can help.

I decided to replay Batman Arkham Asylum with mods, since I figured it'd probably be a lot better.  However, when I finally got into the game, it froze as soon as my shaders finished compiling and loading.  From then on, through numerous removals and re-additions of mods, like a dozen reshade installs (across both 6.5.0 and 6.3.3, which I still had in my downloads folder), installations of old drivers and more, I finally just removed reshade and it ran fine.

The issue:
The game freezes as soon as reshade finishes loading shaders, usually on a black screen.  This is not a problem with compatibility between reshade and my other mods, I tried uninstalling them and running the game with just reshade.

I just installed Reshade on The Sims 4 and I didn't install by default but I selected all the filters from the start, something you shouldn't do. Install Reshade with the basic selection without anything else and then go into the game and configure a few things, e.g., shortcuts, then quit the game, go back to the Reshade installation and update the filters. Normally, the game starts without problems with more filters. On the first launch with all the filters, I noticed that the reshade.ini file is empty and my game stays on a black screen. I uninstalled Reshade then reset to default, launched the game and everything works. Finished the configuration, I put my preset in a folder named reshade-preset instead of the game root, opened the reshade.ini then added like this to the line "PresetPath=.\reshade-preset\Off.ini" instead of "PresetPath=.\Off.ini".

hey, sorry to reply so late after but I'm having this same issue. I've tried on 6.4.1, 6.0, and 5.6 without anything working out. Is this bug still persistent? If it helps, I was trying to update my reshade to a newer version - as I was on 5.4.1 before.

ReShade glitching my Sims 2 game was created by missnakii
I firstly downloaded ReShade properly by following a tutorial. It worked, so got to take some photos and edit the lighting. I used it for a couple of days when my game suddenly started glitching like in the video I screenshoted. As I move the camera everything is normal, but as the camera stands still the sea and everything moving (birds, waves, plumbob etc.) disappears. Same in the game, the sims' hair disappears as well as the glass on the windows, pets etc. as soon as the camera stops moving. I have plenty of memory, I reinstalled ReShade multiple times, I tried installing all the effects or only a couple of them and the same glitch keeps happening every time. The only thing to stop it is to uninstall ReShade, but I don't want that. What should it do?

im having this same problem currently, anyone find a solution yet? i see it working fine for some folks still but everything ive tried so far makes no difference. always black screen and eventually no response error. i had to uninstall for the time being. hoping someone finds a fix or reshade gets another update soon :(

Sup! I came back to FiveM and uninstalled everything—I mean GTA and FiveM. After reinstalling, I wanted to install ReShade again, but I ran into an issue. I can download and set it up, but I can't open it. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know. I feel like I've tried everything.
