Do not know if this will be possible, but worth asking. Is it possible to detect darkness and increase the brightness of the lights?
The idea is to increase the brightness of the lights and light objects at night but not during the day as they saturate.

Yes, use the adaptation feature of the ambient light shader in GemFx suite, it does exactly what you described.

You can also combine it with Marty's Bloom shader in the GemFx suite and control it with the ambient light adaptation. :)
