So I love how mid early 90s PC games looked. With 256 color shaders.

Just imagine how crazy this would look with modern day graphics?

Anyway to get this look or anyone willing to program this?

Just a suggestion.

Thanks.

I posted a 256 color version of the original Nostalgia shader, that I painstakingly converted all the color values into RGB numeric integers, and nobody even cared. but if you're looking for it, it's up on the forums here, it's the doom palette though.

I slapped together a quick and dirty routine that snaps color values to their nearest bit if they were being represented using "standard" bit assignments of 3R, 3G, 2B without a palette. It works, but I don't think it's going to look that good in most newer games.

Personally the one thing I always associate with 256 color games is the dithering patterns. Now historically, they were a result of working within a limited color palette. But there's just something about the grittiness of it that is very pleasing to the eye. Unfortunately a lot of games that claim to have "retro" graphics are missing this aspect, making it look kinda cheap as a result, like they took high-res, high-color graphics and just resized them. Take this as an example:

With just a couple shaders it looks much more retro-accurate and interesting to me. Unfortunately in motion this shader trick doesn't look that good, but hopefully you get the point.
