Blocked artifacts with MXAO in RDR2

I am busy with optimizing stuff for RDR2. One of the shaders I use is MXAO. When I use only that, weird artifacts appear, see screenshot.
But when I use the Clarity shader for example and place that on top, then the artifacts are gone and MXOA does what it is suppose to do?
I know that is has something to do with "Culling Mask" because in the MXAO debug view, that follows the artifacts 100% ... I just have no clue on what Culling Mask is :P
So it's no big issue, MXAO works but *only* in combination with other shaders? Just curious about it.
