Inconsistent depth buffer Mass Effect 2

I'm having problems with depth buffering in Mass Effect 2. I downloaded this Fix for the d3d9.dll. It was working fine until recently, but now the depth buffer has stopped working, only flashing intermittently.

So, it turns out that the problem has something to do with network connection. i just disconnected my internet and the problem went away. I noticed this in the troubleshooting section, but I had disregarded it as a possibility because I had it running for a while before, and this problem only just started.
