TOPIC: Doom 3 vs Prey (2006) - depth buffer

Doom 3 vs Prey (2006) - depth buffer 1 year 5 months ago #1

I recently tried ReShade with Doom 3 (the original 2004 release with the latest patch) and I was impressed at how good it looked with the SuperDepth3D.fx shader. Finally, I can play again with a version of Doom 3 that supports mods and stereoscopy!
Then I tried Prey (the 2006 game by Human Head). Despite being based on the same engine, no depth map resulted in a stereoscopic scene. With Google, I found out that ReShade cannot find the depth buffer in Prey. But... why? Has the Doom 3 engine been modified that much for Prey, so that ReShade cannot make sense of it?
Is it something that can be fixed right now, by tweaking some game settings? If not, how likely is it to be fixed in the future?

Yes, I know I'm bumping an old thread, but I have a VERY good reason to do so. I have just been able to PLAY PREY (2006) IN STEREOSCOPY!!!
To do this, I've used ReShade 3.0.0 and a version of the SuperDepth3D.fx shader which still comprised 26 depth maps. The depth map I'm using is #10, which makes environments appear larger and deeper compared to the default choice. The one thing I had to do, in order to let ReShade access the depth buffer, was to disable the glow in the game options, which instantly turns the scene from uselessly flat to deep and real.
If you try to configure ReShade with this game and discover that you cannot move the mouse pointer in the configuration screen, I'll bump this thread again soon, to post a link to the configuration files I use.

Hello. This has nothing to do with the main theme of your post but, since you managed to get Doom3 working I thought you might help.
I installed the latest reshade into Doom3 but when I bring up the overlay I can't control the mouse cursor for the overlay. I still control de cursor in the game. So I can't even start the tutorial.

Can you help me?

It also works with the new shader with just about default settings.

Good news ^_^ This means Depth 3D is the only way to play this game in 3D. I don't have to make an old system just to play this game. Thank you.

Yes, Setting glow to off did work.

Still, we have to fight with the ReShade Menu. A fierce battle of Shift Tabbing and Clicking. :woohoo:

I will look into adjusting the Weapon Hand To Night if it's needed.

Yeah, I tried with the new shader too, but it looks pretty much like with depth map 0 of the old shader (everything looks smaller and closer to you). I prefer depth map 10 of the old shader, your mileage may vary.

Since the mouse pointer cannot move when ReShade is configured in the game, I might have to fire up my L33T Visual Basic skillz (haha) and make a program that loads an existent configuration and lets the user tweak it from OUTSIDE the game. :cheer:

I bet everyone thought I was joking, but I actually did it! This page will let you download a number of Prey-related utilities and files, and one of them is ReHook, a Visual Basic program I made that reads the SuperDepth3D.fx settings it finds (or creates default files if it doesn't find them) and lets the user edit and save them from outside the game!
ReHook includes the opengl32.dll from ReShade 3.0.0 and a version of SuperDepth3D.fx that includes 26 depth maps, because I personally found the best results with depth map 10, which the latest versions of SuperDepth3D.fx lack. You can also use this program with Doom 3 and Quake 4.

BTW, that page is only a small part of my larger Prey Museum site. If you want to know more about the development of Prey, you might find it interesting.

Ya problem when using an AMD GPU when launching this game. It crashes to desktop when launching.

The issue seems to mirror what happens in this post. But, With a different game.
reshade.me/forum/troubleshooting/130-sol...ith-reshade-crashing

Tested with an RX 580 and GTX 1060.

This does not happen when using Nvidia GPUs.

That's why I wasn't aware of it, my PC has an nVidia GPU. Does it still crash if you replace the included opengl32.dll file with the one from the latest version of ReShade (but with the same version of SuperDepth3D.fx)?

Yes, it does crash at startup. It has something to do with atioglxx.dll. Since that's what Debugging told me. Without Reshade the Game Starts up just fine.

That's the user mode component of AMD's graphics driver. Usually crashes in there because of faulty DX/GL calls made by the game/ReShade (less likely at this point) or because of a driver bug (more likely).
Cheers, crosire =)

Ok, I will have to file a bug report on AMD website then. Thank you.
